The Crimea, Indian Mutiny Long Service Group of 4 awarded to Private John Whitehouse, 8th Hussars and 5th Dragoon Guards comprising, Crimea Medal 1854-55, four clasps, Alma, Balaklava, Inkermann, Sebastopol, (Pte Jno. Whitehouse. 8. Hussars.) engraved naming, Indian Mutiny Medal, 1857-58, one clasp, Central India, (John Whitehouse, 8th Hussars.), Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, QVR, small letter reverse, (488 John Whitehouse 5th Dragn. Gds.), Turkish Crimea, Sardinian Issue, unnamed as issued, ornate straight bar suspension, very fine (4)
John Whitehouse was born in 1825 or 26 in Aldborough, Yorkshire. He attested for the 8th Hussars at York on the 29th of November 1843. He served for 16 1/2 years with the 8th Hussars including 1 years and 10 months in the Crimea and 2 ½ years in India, present at Kotah and Gwalior. He was Discharged at his own request at Canterbury on the 8th of May 1860. A year later on the 4th of May 1861 he attested as a Private in the 5th Dragoon Guards. He served in England and Ireland for almost 12 years until he again requested his Discharge at Canterbury on the 11nd of April 1873. He re-joined again but only after a short period he retired at the age of 48 after 28 years and 169 days with the Colours. He Retired to live in Manchester and died in 1876 aged 50.
