The Persia, Defence of Lucknow, Pair awarded to Private James Grossett, 78th (2nd Seaforth Highlanders) comprising, India General Service Medal, 1854-95, one clasp, Persia, (J. Grossett, 78th Highlanders), Indian Mutiny Medal 1857-58, two clasps, Defence of Lucknow, Lucknow, (James Grossett 78th Regt), some small scratches obverse IGSM, two edge bumps, suspension slack, edge bump Mutiny otherwise toned fine (2)
James Grossett stated that he was a Labourer, when he enlisted on the 28th of November 1855 at Edinburgh for service with the 78th Regiment of Highlanders. He was promoted to Corporal on the 14th of March 1865 but on the 4th of November 1868 was reduced to the rank of Private after a Trial. However, he later attained Corporal and Lance Serjeant. He served in the Army for 19 years 157 days including 8 ½ overseas, 3 months in Persia and 8 years 3 months in India. He was discharged unfit for further military service following a medical board at Aberdeen on the 25th of August 1874, having been diagnosed with Rheumatism and chronic debility. He was accepted as a Chelsea out pensioner on the 15th of September 1874 and as an in-pensioner from the 1st of November 1875, James died on the 13th of April 1879.
