Description
The 1914 Star awarded to Private Joseph Shaw Calverley, 4th Battalion Middlesex Regiment, who landed in France on the 14th of August 1914 as did Private John Parr of the 4th Battalion Middlesex Regiment who is believed to be the 1st Battle Casualty of the Great War. The 4th Battalion Middlesex held the Canal Bank at Mons from Obourg to Nimy Bridge on the 23rd of August 1914. Private Calverley’s Papers say “BEF 14th August 1914 to 23rd August 1914 - Home 24th August 1914 to the 10th of November 1914”, 79 Days at Home presumably wounded before returning to the BEF only to be Severely Wounded by a Gun Shot Wound to Left Leg on the 9th of May 1915 whilst the Battalion was at Hill 60. Diagnosed with Tuberculosis attributed to Exposure and Frostbite whilst in the Trenches in 1914 he was Discharged on the 15th of December Disabled by Tuberculosis and he Died on the 17th of July 1918 of T.B. comprising, 1914 Star with Copy Aug-Nov Clasp, (L-6215 Pte J. Joseph Calverley joined the Middlesex Regiment on the 19th of April 1900 stating that he had been born on the 3rd of June 1868.
