The 1914 Star awarded to Private John Mulally, “D” Company, 2nd Battalion Connaught Rangers who was Killed in Action on the 7th of November 1914 in Polygon Wood comprising, 1914 Star, (10444 Pte J. Mullaly. 2/Conn: Rang.), very fine (1)
Private Mulally landed in France with the 2nd Battalion Connaught Rangers on the 14th of August 1914, he saw action at Mons, and was involved in the Retreat from Mons, he crossed the Marne in September 1914, and “C” and “D” Companies were in the attack at Langemarck on the 21st of October. On the 25th of October the Battalion moved into Polygon Wood taking over Molenaaresthoek Trenches, losing 1 officer and 10 other ranks killed 1 officer and 16 other ranks wounded on the 31st “C” Company attacked enemy trenches, and “A” and “D” Companies repulsed an enemy attack on the 1st of November with 10 Killed and 35 wounded. On the 5th of November the enemy came forward after dark “B” Company driving them back between the 7th and the 8th of November 2 further attacks repulsed 1 officer and 4 other ranks, including Private Mullaly, were killed.
Private Mullaly’s body was not located after the War and he is commemorated on Panel 42 of the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial; he was the son of James and Mary Mullaly of Newcastle, Enfield, County Meath. He was 20 years old when he was Killed.
