Description
The 1914 Star awarded to Private John O’Neill, 2nd Battalion Prince of Wales’s Volunteers (South Lancashire) Regiment who had been wounded in July 1915 and who was Killed in Action in the Battalion Attack at Bellewarde Ridge, Hooge, Ypres Salient on the 25th of September 1915 comprising 1914 Star, (7560 Pte J. O’Neill.2/S. Lan: R.), very fine (1)
John O’Neill landed in France with the 2nd Battalion South Lancashire Regiment on the 14th of August 1914, the Battalion Battle Honours for 1914 are Mons, Le Cateau, Retreat from Mons, Marne, Aisne, La Bassee, Messines 1914, Armentieres, Ypres 1914 and Non Bosschen. Private O’Neill was not wounded until July 1915 but, returning to his Battalion he was Killed in the attack on Bellewarde on the 25th of September 1915, the Battalion loosing 70 men in the attack, Private O’Neill’s body was not found after the War and he is remembered on Panel 37 of the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial to the missing. He was a Native of Liverpool.
