Description
The 1914 Star to a Veteran of the Boer War, Serjeant Thomas Harold Spencer, 2nd Battalion Royal Scots, who was Reduced to the Ranks for Misconduct and was Killed in Action as a Private on the 20th of April 1915, the only man Killed that day from the Battalion whilst in Trenches at St Eloi, in the Ypres Salient, comprising, 1914 Star, (9623 Sjt T. Spencer. 2/R. Scots.), very fine (1)
Thomas Harold Spencer was born on the 2nd of June 1880 in Leicester, a native of Glasgow when he enlisted into the Royal Scots at Glencorse. He had previously served in the South Africa War and had proceeded to Franc withe the 2nd Battalion Royal Scots on the 23rd of October 1914. His 1914 Star is impressed Serjeant, but his Medal Card shows “Reduced Misconduct”.
The Battalion War Dairy for the 20th of April states –
“Quiet day in trenches. Casualties one man killed”.
Thomas was the son of the late Thomas and Sarah Spencer, and the husband of Isabella Mathison Spencer of 17 Carstairs Street, Bridgeton, Glasgow. He is buried in Row A, Grave 48, Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery, Ypres. He was 38 years old when he was killed.
