The 1914 Star awarded to Private Charles Southwell, 3rd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment who was wounded in 1914 and then wounded again in 1916 during the Battle of the Somme Dying of Wounds at Home on the 8th of September 1916 comprising, 1914 Star, (10076 Pte C. Southwell. 3/Worc: R.) very fine (1)
Charles Southwell, a native of Chatham enlisted in Chatham and served with the 3rd Battalion the Worcestershire Regiment in France from the 12th of August 1914. He appears in the 2nd General Hospital Admissions Register for Nov 1914 with a shrapnel wound to the left hand, he was returned Home with this wound by a Hospital Ship. His name appears in the Times Casualty List for his 1914 wounding
The 3rd Battalion the Worcesters made two big attacks in July and August 1916, they attack Ovillers on the 10th to 17th July taking 177 Casualties and they attack the Hindenburg Trench on the 24th of August taking a further 234 Casualties, it is most likely that Private Southwell was wounded in one of these attacks. His name appears in the Times Casualty list in September 1916 and he Dies of wounds at Military Hospital in Eastbourne and is buried back home in Catsfield (St Lawrence) Churchyard Extension
