The 1914 Star awarded to Private Sidney James Redshaw, 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment who was Killed in the Battalion attack at Gheluvelt on the 29th of October 1914 comprising 1914 Star, entitled to Aug-Nov Clasp, (6164 Pte S.J. Redshaw. 1/ Glouc: R.), very fine (1)
Private Redshaw landed in France on the 31st of August 1914 he was Killed in Action on the 29th of October 1914.

War Diary states – 29th of October 1914 - Took Part in the Battle of Gheluvelt
“C” Company advanced on left of Gheluvelt Chateaum grounds eastern outskirts of village. – Everard Wyrall notes early casualties among officers and that the company “practically ceased to exist”. “D” Company moved along the Menin Road to within 300 yards of the Kruiseecke cross roads. Heavy shell fire and constant attacks from the north-east later forced a withdrawal. “A” Company advancing behind “C” also suffered heavy casualties. “B” Company moved forward north of Gheluvelt Church, cross the Menin Road east of the village and advanced towards Kruiseecke. Withdrawal forced after strong enemy attacks. 2 Officers and 56 other ranks killed, 2 officers 64 other ranks wounded 2 officers and 34 other ranks taken prisoner.
Private Redshaw’s body was not located after the Great War, and he is commemorated on Panel 34 of the Ypres 9Menin Gate) Memorial to the Missing. He was the husband of Ellen Elizabeth Webb (formerly Redshaw) , of 34, King’s Goss Road, Clerkenwell, London he was 31 years old.
