The 7th (Service) Battalion was raised on the 19th of August 1914. After training it landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula on the 11th of June on “Y” Beach Cape Helles. The 7th Battalion fought throughout the Gallipoli Campaign, distinguishing itself at the Battle of Chunuk Bair. Afterwards it served in Mesopotamia, including the capture of Baghdad. It ended the war with the North Persia Force at Baku on the Caspian Sea.
William Cowing Pickering is thought to have enlisted in the Ceylon Mounted Rifles Regiment. Enlisted or Transferred to the Gloucester Regiment, 7th (Service) Battalion. Promoted 2nd Lieutenant on the 19th of Match 195, Promoted Temporary Captain on the 11th of August 195.
