Description
The 1914 Star awarded to Gunner Walter Herbert Jenkins, 3rd Brigade Royal Horse Artillery who landed in France on the 15th of August 1914 serving with either “D” or “E” Batteries that fought at Mons, Elouges, Le Cateau and Néry comprising, 1914 Star, (74701 Gnr: W. H. Jenkins. R.H.A.) entitled to Aug-Nov Clasp, very fine (1)
At the outbreak of The Great War the 3rd Brigade R.H.A. was at Newbridge attached to 3rd Cavalry Brigade, comprised of “D” and “E” Batteries. On mobilization, it was assigned to The Cavalry Division (later 1st Cavalry Division) along with VII Brigade, RHA.
The Division crossed to France between 15 and 18 August 1914, concentrated around Maubeuge between 18 and 20 August, and moved forward towards Mons on 21 August. Its first action was the Battle of Mons on 23 and 24 August where the Division formed the left flank. It took part in the subsequent retreat, notably the Actions of Elouges and Solesmes, the Battle of Le Cateau, the action at Néry and the First Battle of the Marne
Gunner Jenkins was admitted to 2nd Gen Hospital at Le Havre admission in 1918 with 'boils, face'
