Description
The 1914 Star awarded to Private Herbert Edwin Baker “D” Company 1st Battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps who had fought the action at Mons, participated in the Retreat From Mons, the attack on Polygon Wood and was Killed by a Shell with 4 other men on the 30th of October 1914 in trenches 800 yards east of the Passchendaele-Becelare Road comprising, 1914 Star, entitled to Aug-Nov clasp, (4246 Pte H.E. Barker. 1/K.R. Rif: C.), very fine (1)
Herbert Edwin Barker was born in Chatham Kent he enlisted into the K.R.R.C. in Gosport on the 20th of February 1902. He served in South Africa in 1903, he proceeded to France with the 1st Battalion on the 22nd of August 1914 and was Killed in Action (Soldiers Died), Died of Wounds (Service Papers) on the 30th of October 1914. He was the son of Charlotte Barker of 9, Old Road, Seafield, Gosport, Hants, His Body was not located after the War, and he is commemorated on Panel 53 of the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial to the Missing.
