The 1914 Star awarded to Private William Murray, 1st Battalion East Lancashire Regiment who fought the first action from Le Cateau on the Retreat from Mons wounded crossing the Marne comprising 1914 Star, (8038 Pte W. Murray. 1/E Lan: R.) very fine (1)
Private William Murray landed in Franc with the 1st Battalion East Lancashire Regiment on the 22nd of August 1914 and moved with them by train to Le Cateau. They engaged the enemy on the Carriererec Ridge on the 26th of August, in their first engagement 4 Officers were wounded, one mortally, and 257 other ranks were reported Killed wounded or missing. Such losses in four days! Private Murray is listed in the Casualty List of the 28th of September 1914 as wounded. The Battalion was in action crossing the Marne and the Aisne during September 1914. Private Murray survived the war being Discharged 25% Disabled in March 1919.
