The Queen’s South Africa Medal to Private Charles Nelthorpe 16th Company Imperial Yeomanry who was Killed in Action at Kleinfontein on the 24th of October 1901 comprising, Queen’s South Africa Medal, 1899-1902, 3rd Type, three clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal (25743 Pte C. Nelthorpe. 16th Coy Imp: Yeo:), impressed naming very fine (1)
Charles Nelthorpe, a native of Lincolnshire, attested into the Imperial Yeomanry on the 12th of February 1901, stating that he was a 26-year-old watchmaker who was serving with the 4th Battalion South Wales Borderers. He was posted to the 16th Company Imperial Yeomanry on the same day. He served in South Africa from the 1st of March 1901. On the 24th of October 1901, he was Killed in Action at Kleinfontein when his column was attacked by Boers. “The Boer War Casualty Roll 1899-1902” by Alexander M Palmer states that Private C Nelthorpe was Killed in Action at Kleinfontein on the 24th of October 1901 whilst serving in the 5th Company Imperial Yeomanry.
