Description
An Excellent Pair of Pay Books to Father and Son. Father Private Edward Madden Westmorland & Cumberland Yeomanry who was wounded by a Gun Shot Wound Left Ankle near Ypres 20th of November 1917, and his son, Warrant Officer John Edward Madden Air Gunner 156 Squadron RAF who was shot down on by a Night Fighter on the 20th of December 1942 flying from RAF WArboys in Wellington BJ589 in an operation to Duisburg, in the first Oboe Raid of the War. Comprising Army Book 64 (AB64) Soldiers Pay Book Active Service, 2083 Private Edward Madden. And RAF Form 64 Royal Air Force Airman’s Service and Pay Book, 1528610 Warrant Officer John Edward Madden Air Gunner. Used Condition (2)
Private Edward Madden landed in France with the Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry on the 10th July 1915 he was Disabled by a Gun Shot Wound to his Left Ankle on the 20th of November 1917 whilst part of a carrying party in/to Eagle Trench near Ypres as a result of this wound and after spending 4 months in hospital he was transferred to the Re-Mount Department, finally being Demobilised on the 10th of April 1919. Sold with various original papers contained in Pay Book. He would be entitled to a 1914-15 Star Trio.
Warrant Officer John Edward Madden , an Air Gunner with 156 Squadron was shot down by a Night Fighter on the first Oboe Raid of the War in an attack on Duisburg on the 20th of December 1942. Of the Crew, the Pilot F/S Proudfoot and Sgt Madden were taken Prisoner of War, F/S Jackes RCAF and Sgts Wallis and Calvert were killed and are buried in Jonkerbos War Cemetery , Nijmegen, Holland. Sgt Madden was first Held at Heijden, Camp IXC, in Holland, then sent to camp 9C at Mühlhausen this was not a specific Luft camp, but a processing hub, he was then sent to Stalag Luft 6. The last Entry in the Pay Book is the 26th of November 1942. Sold with his Civilian Identity Card Red Cross Letter of welcome to returning Prisoners of war , two copies of “The Prisoner of War” a newspaper for next of kin dated October 1943, and December 1943. Twenty Krieggefangenpost letters, various post cards and menus. He would be entitled to a 1939-45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star and a 1939-45 War Medal.
