GB Playing Card Duty 1783 Ace of Spades for Ireland? T Wheller

Treasures of Revenue Philately | S26018
Auction: 8 September 2026 10:30 BST
Description
c.1783 proof impression of an Ace of spades with Irish harp, Prince of Wales feathers, English Roses and Scottish Thistles, with ‘Quis Separabit’ (Who shall separate) appearing to refer to the 1800 Act of Union. The proof is most unusual as no Duty is shown, although in the British Museum a pack of cards is held with this ace made by T Wheller who was active 1800-1810. A highly attractive lot ex Champion and offered on his original display page.
