1878-83 proof of a ?a value in black on thin wove paper, handstamped CANCELLED in red, marginal at left.  Staal (page 265) refers to a 'unique' proof of a ?a; a rare and interesting item  
  
A ?a stamp could only have paid a postcard rate for visitors entitled to the half-rate privilege.  There are now two examples known to us.
