Description
Russia , Elizabeth Petrovna (1741-1762), silver Rouble, 1742 СПБ, St. Petersburg mint (Bit. 244; Diakov 35). In NGC holder graded XF 45 (8222220-002). Overstruck on an earlier Rouble of Ivan III.
Footnote
Having deposed the infant Emperor Ivan III, Elizabeth Petrovna ordered all coinage featuring her predecessor to be restruck to feature her image, and around 665,000 Roubles were exchanged in just over a year. The speed at which this was enacted meant that Elizabeth’s coins share some features with coins of Ivan III, such as an enlarged diameter (by 2-3mm) and some appear with the mint’s name on the edge rather than on the obverse. Elizabeth financed several architectural projects during her reign, which greatly improved the country’s infrastructure. The people of Russia paid the price through increased taxation.
