Footnote
Catherine I Alexeyevna was the second wife and Empress consort of Peter the Great, whom she succeeded as Empress of Russia, ruling from 1725 until her death in 1727. Peter the Great died without naming a successor. Catherine represented the interests of the so-called ‘new men’, commoners who had been brought to positions of great power by Peter based on their merit.
