Description
1877 pair of envelopes from Singapore to London, respectively endorsed “via Brindisi” (MY 12) and “Via Marseilles” (MY 19), the former franked at 16c by 1867-72 8c pair, the latter franked by 1867-72 12c, all tied by good to fine strikes of “B-172” octagons with red despatch cds alongside and London arrival backstamps of JU 18 and JU 19; slight envelope faults nevertheless an interesting pair of covers illustrating the main mail routes to England.
Footnote
Although posted a week apart, these two covers would have been carried to Europe on the same ship, thereby demonstrating that the more expensive Brindisi route represented a saving of a day over the cheaper Marseilles route.
