Forty-second Balloons of the Siege: 1870 entire letter to St. Helier, Jersey franked by Napoleon III 10c and 20c Empire adhesives, tied by Star mark with Paris (60) cds for 12 Dec, carried by the Balloon 'Ville de Paris' which departed Paris on 15 Dec, no arrival marks, and some peripheral wear, still an attractive cover.
xxx The Balloon landed in Western Germany south-east of Strasbourg the first of the Balloons to do so; the pilot, passengers, mail and 12 pigeons were all captured and imprisoned. The pilot Monsieur Delamarne was moved in January for interrogation; he managed to escape in thick fog and presented himself to the Governor of Paris on the 14th January. xxx
