Description
1891 (JA 24) cover to a senior Catholic churchman in Montevideo, Uruguay, franked with 1885-87 1d brownish claret horizontal pair and diagonal bisect, tied by fine strikes of ‘First Bisect’ cork cancel with type F2 despatch cds at right. Fancy ‘LISTAS’ arrival backstamp of ‘29 ENERO 91’ on reverse. Minor gum stains and yellowing, not detracting from this exceptional and desirable cover from the first mail on which bisect provisionals were used. A15 in Barton's 2002 listing and the only known bisect cover from this mail to a 'foreign' destination. SG 8/a cat £4,000
Footnote
Barton's suggestion that this cover is underfranked, the notional rate being 4d is contradicted by the record of other similarly franked 1891 covers to Uruguay. None were taxed and it would thus appear the rate was indeed 2½d.
