Description

1892-94 3c on 32c carmine-rose, the celebrated L-shaped “block” of 3 with the upper stamp (R10/3, upper left pane) showing ERROR SURCHARGE OMITTED, with normal horizontal pair (R1/3-4 lower left pane) below, separated by interpane margin (creased as always), fresh and fine o.g. with the error unmounted. Unique in this spectacular se-tenant format, with just four interpane pairs now possible in private hands (and a fifth in the Royal Collection). Truly one of the great pieces of Straits Settlements philately, with an impressive pedigree. The format of this block proves conclusively that, while six pairs originally existed, only five can now survive as explained by the Part I footnote (see also the illustration on p.36 in Lockhart's 1925 book and his note on p.22).
