Description
1912 1d stamp frame & medal head bromides, stamp-sized on photographic paper, the first ‘’Laurel & Oak Leaf'' frame design as used for the 1d & 2½d values, the second bromide of Bertram Mackennal's sculptured ‘’medal'' head. Following the decision not to use the ‘’Lion Couchant'' frame (as used on the 1d Downey's) as the head was considered too cramped in the frame. These bromides were subsequently produced so that different sized portraits could be inserted behind the frame, this was done at the request of the King who had expressed doubts concerning the size of the head in proportion to the frame. A fascinating and rare pair of proofs. Listed in Specialised Vol. II p119.
