Description
South West Africa. Tribal Taxes. Ukuanyama. A pair of cards illustrating the large and small Ukuanyama overprints on the c.1913 South Africa grey and brown large KGV head 5/-. The first shows with payments for 1935-1939, the 1935 and 1936 taxes are paid by two 5/-green and red postage stamps with silver bars at the base overprinted with the tribal name, no stamp in the space for the 1937 tax which is marked "Paid see old card", the 1938 tax is paid by a small KGV head blue 5/- stamp overprinted S.W.A. in black and the tribe name in red while the space for 1939 has a c.1913 South Africa grey and brown large KGV head 5/- stamp surcharged with the large "UKUANYAMA/ S.W.A" overprint partially stuck over the blue stamp in the 1938 space. The second card shows the payment for 1936 with a c.1913 South Africa grey and brown large KGV head 5/- stamp overprinted small "UKUANYAMA / S.W.A", the tax for 1937 paid with a 5/- green and brown postage stamp with a silver bar at the base and the tribal name, both stamps carrying a dated triangular cancel inscribed "TRIBAL FUNDS/ OVAMBOLAND/ CORN TAX" used to indicate payment of the tax in kind. The stamps on both cards clean and fresh in fine condition.
