1877 Used Abroad. A superb envelope sent by a German Missionary Christian Hornberger from Keta, Gold Coast (Modern day Ghana) to Liverpool, bearing a 2d Deep blue (SG 47, Pl.14) and a 4d Vermilion (SG 94, Pl.14) both cancelled upon arrival by Liverpool "466" numerals with a "Paid/Liverpool/BR.Packet" cds at lower left for AP.2.1877. Endorsed on reverse in red manuscript by the recipient A Rickli "Private. from Miss (Missionary) Hornberger Keta/ 2 April (an indecipherable word) Abroad/ Ex. "Benin" (SS)/ R_" Carried by The African Steam Ship Companies S.S. Benin. _x000D_

Christian Hornberger from the North German Mission in Bremen was an Agriculturist, linguist and Photographer. He created among other things the first map of the Ewe area translated the Bible into the local Ewe dialect and a photographic record of the indigenous population.
