1858 1d Rose red. Very fine used example lettered HI neatly tied to entire by a superb strike of the rare Manchester "498" Beard stamping machine cancel for MA.5.1858. Addressed to Macclesfield with an arrival cds on reverse for the following day. The Beard stamping machine was trialled for only a few weeks in March 1858, this example pre-dating Parmenter's EKD by 6 days. The machine was deemed unsatisfactory due to problems with the ink pad either over-inking or under-inking the die, hence superb impressions are rarely seen.
