The Scare Single Clasp Queen’s South Africa Medal awarded to Lance Corporal, Daniel McMahon, 2nd Battalion Scots Guards who was Killed in Action at Belmont on the 23rd of November 1899 comprising, Queen’s South Africa Medal, 2nd type, ghost dates, one clasp Belmont, (2059 Pte D. McMahon, Scots Gds:) impressed naming, edge bruise under “H” of Mahon otherwise very fine (1)
The Battalion had very heavy fighting at Belmont on 23rd November. Lord Methuen said, "The Scots Guards carried out their instructions to the letter and gained the heights at the point of the bayonet". Colonel Paget and three other officers were highly praised by Lord Methuen and General Colvile. The Battalion's losses were severe, being approximately 10 men killed, 3 officers and 34 men wounded.
Daniel McMahon was born in Dublin Ireland c.1874, he stated that he was a Foreman of Quarrymen when he enlisted in Perth on the 12th of April 1898. He served in South Africa with the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards from the 21st of October 1899 until he was Killed in Action 34 Days later on the 23rd of November 1899. He had been appointed to Lance Corporal on the 9th of September 1899.
