The Abyssinia Campaign Medal awarded to Assistant Surgeon, later Brigade Surgeon Lieutenant Colonel, Joseph Ridge Greenhill who was Surgeon to “G” Battery 14th Brigade Royal Artillery during the Campaign of 1867-68 comprising Abyssinian War Medal, (Asst. Surgn. J.R. Greenhill G By. 14 Bde. RA.), very fine (1)
Joseph Ridge Greenhill was born in 1838 at Malling South, Lewes, Sussex Family was living in Saint Michael, Sussex, England
Attended St. Bartholomew's Hospital medical school. Received his Apothecaries papers Royal College of Surgeons qualified in Art of Science of Surgery. MRCS Qualified to practice the Science of Midwifery Working at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London as a house surgeon. Appointed as an officer in the medical department of the army Assistant Surgeon. Received his commission Accepted into the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. FRCS Serving with the Royal Artillery in Abyssinia and was at the capture of Magdela.
Surgeon. Received his commission Married Adriana Carmichael (born 1846) from Edinburgh. Both were residing in St. George, Bermuda where they were married at the Garrison Chapel by CA Solbe of Her Majesty Forces. He was 36 and she 28 First child Adriana Eliza born Adriana died.
Surgeon Major. Received his commission 1888 - September - 4 Brigade Surgeon. Received his commission 1890
1893 - February - 16 Brigade Surgeon Lt. Col. F R C S on retired pay 1911 - 1918 Church warden in St Martins in Dorking 1915 Died, 86 years. Buried at St Martins Cemetery, Dorking 1949
Sold with original St Bartholomew’s Graduation Certificate, Commission into the Royal Artillery, Apothecary Certificate, Certificate Royal College of Surgeons, Fellows Certificate R.C.S. Art of Science and Surgery Certificate and a Certificate in his proficiency in Anatomy. Original photograph in later life. Medal in Red Card Box.
