The Waterloo Medal awarded to Private John Lane, 2nd (Royal North British) Regiment of Dragoons, The Royal Scots Greys, who served in Captain Robert Vernor’s Troop, a member of which was Serjeant Ewart who captured the Eagle of the 45th French Regiment comprising, Waterloo Medal 1815, original clip and ring suspension (John Lane 2nd Or R.N. Brit. Reg. Drag.), Fair (1)
On June 18th, 1815, The Scots Greys, led by Lieutenant Colonel James Hamilton, were part of the Union Brigade of Cavalry Regiments commanded by the Duke of Wellington that faced Napoleon’s Army across the Battlefield of Waterloo. As the Dutch forces retired the Union Brigade charged the French Columns with the Scots Greys on the left flank. In the melee, Serjeant Charles Ewart, of Captain Vernor’s Troop, captured the Eagle of the 45th Infantry Regiment of the Line. Captain Vernor and Ewart were both wounded. The Scots Greys Casualties were 104 Killed, 97 wounded and 228 of the 416 horses were lost.
Private John Lane (Land) was born in West Harnham, Salisbury, a labourer by trade. He enlisted in May 1801. Survived un-wounded at Waterloo. Served for 22 years with the Regiment and Discharged through Chelsea Pension Office in 1821 being unfit for service because of chronic Rheumatism.
