The 1914 Star awarded to Private George Sherlock, 1st Battalion Scots Guards who was Reported Missing on the 11th of November 1914 during an attack on our Trenches by the Prussian Guard and later reported Killed in Action, his body being buried by the Germans in Gheluvelt comprising 1914 Star entitled to Aug-Nov Clasp, (7227 Pte G. Sherlock. S. Gds:), very fine (1)
Extract Ray Westlake’s – British Battalion in France and Flanders 1914
11th November 1914
The Regimental history records that the Prussian Guard attacked through Veldhoek capturing front trenches of 1st Brigade. Battalion at this time was holding a farm near Gheluvelt Wood and after heavy fighting was overwhelmed. Total casualties since entering into the Battle of Ypres are given as 9 Officers, 105 other ranks killed, 7 Officer, 151 other ranks wounded, 7 Officers, 430 other ranks missing. Survivors – Captain Stacey and 69 men.
George Sherlock joined the Scots Guards at Edinburgh on the 16th of October 1908, a 19-Year-old Coal Miner from Westrigg, West Lothian. He served with the 1st Battalion in Egypt in 1911and went to France, according to his Service Papers, on the 31st of August 1914. He was posted as Missing on the 11th of November in the action at Gheluvelt Farm and finally confirmed as Killed in Action that day on the 19th of January 1915. He was Buried by the Germans who identified him by his Identity Discs in Gheluvelt. His body was not located after the War and he is now commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial to the Missing on Panel 11. He was the son of George and Euphemia Sherlock, of 130, Westrigg, Blackridge, West Lothian, he was 25 years old.
