Description
An Advance To Victory, Courtrai, Military Cross awarded to Lieutenant (Acting Captain) Edward James Stanley Lister, Royal Field Artillery (Special Reserve) Attached B/15th Brigade Royal Horse Artillery who “Under Heavy Shelling he bought his guns into action” comprising, Military Cross, GVR, privately engraved (Capt E.J.S. Lister. B.R.H.A. 19th Oct. 1918), 1914-15 Star, (1575 Cpl. E.J.S. Lister. C. Of Lond. Yeo.), 1914-1920 British War and Victory Medals, (Capt. E.J.S. Lister.), very fine (4)

On 19th October 1918, he was commanding a battery near Courtrai and was ordered into action to cover a withdrawal from a bridgehead during the evening. He handled his battery most skilfully, and with great gallantry and coolness under heavy shelling, got his guns into action. By his determined efforts fire was brought to bear on the enemy at the right time and place, thus enabling the operation to be successfully carried out.
Corporal Edward James Stanley Lister, 2nd County of London Yeomanry (Westminster Dragoons), proceed to Egypt on the 5th of November 1914. The 2nd County of London Yeomanry proceed to the Gallipoli Peninsula in August 1915 fighting as unmounted troops there until they were withdrawn to Egypt in December 1915, and re-mounting, they patrolled the North Suez Defences with a depot at Zeitoun. Cpl Lister was Commissioned into the Royal Field Artillery on the 13th of February 1917 and proceeded to the Western Front, being awarded a Military Cross in October 1918. After Discharge he became an Insurance man, the 1939 census shows him also as Captain Artillery Reserves. He Died in 1974.
