King’s South Africa Medal awarded to Sapper John Parsons Johnson 47th Company Royal Engineers, who served in the Boer War and the Great War eventually being Discharged in 1919 suffering from Shell Shock comprising, King’s South Africa Medal, two clasps, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902, (3698 Sapr J.P Johnson. R.E.), impressed naming, very fine (1)
John Parsons Johnson attested for the Royal Engineers on the 23rd of September 1899 stating that he was a 21 year-old Shoemaker from Grimsby.
He served Home from the 23rd of September 1899 to the 15th of May 1900, South Africa 16th of May 1900 to the 15th of April 1905, Home 16th of April 1905 to the 22nd of September 1907, To the Army Reserve 23rd of September 1907 to the 5th of August 1914, 6th of August 1914 Mobilised, 15th of September 1914 B.E.F. France until the 14th of November 1915, Home 15th November 1915 to the 30th of November 1916, B.E.F. France 1st of December 1916 to the 6th of May 1919, Home 7th of May 1919 to the 3rd of June 1919 and Discharged after 19 years 254 days with the Colours.
His Medal Index Card confirms that he landed in Farnce on the 15th of September 1914 qualifying for the 1914 Star, British War and Victory Medals to add to his Queen’s South Africa Medal with three clasp, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, and his King’s South Africa with South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902.
His pension papers state that he was admitted to Chelsea Hospital with Neurasthenia, (Shell Shock) and that he Died on the 16th of May 1924.
