Winchelsea, Richard Maplesden (grocer and draper) bronzed Halfpenny 1794, Bust of Prince of Wales right, rev. Prince of Wales Plumes, edge PAYABLE AT RICHARD MAPLESDEN WINCHELSEA .x., 30mm/9.97gm. (DH 39), good Extremely Fine nicely bronzed and well struck from deeply engraved dies. Of the highest rarity, ‘RRR’.
Ex. Spink c. 2008 (their ticket) and therefore highly probable that this piece is Ex. F S Cokayne.
This piece is very similar to the Brighton Camp tokens at the beginning of the series for this county – however, they appear to be minutely different, most discernibly in that the dies are more deeply engraved giving this specimen, especially as it is bronzed, a ‘presentation piece’ or ‘first strike’ feel about it.
