Description
Boscobel, John Westwood an unfinished uniface die trial for the reverse of his Halfpenny, obv. blank rev. an oak tree (fuller than adopted design) but with no legend (although circular guidelines demark legend area) and with what appears to be a snake around the base, edge, PAYABLE AT MACCLESFIELD LIVERPOOL OR CONGLETON, 31mm/12.67gm. (DH -), small rim knock at 8 o’clock on rev., otherwise almost Extremely Fine with chocolate toning. Of the highest rarity – unpublished and very likely unique.
Ex. O'Byrne Col., Part II via Christie's Auction, 10 Jul 1962, lot 128 (part); Bought H. Simmons Oct 1989. Ex. Sven Gahlin Col. (his ticket) via DNW, 4 Dec 2018, lot 2225.
John Westwood used one of the blanks intended for his Macclesfield Copper Co (Roe & Co) series to make this reverse trial, which he struck at his premises in Great Charles Street, Birmingham. In fact all the Boscobel tokens (see previous lot) made by Westwood were struck on blanks intended for tokens that he made for John Wilkinson and the Irish Mine Co, Cronebane.
