Description
The Battle of Jutland – H.M.S. Duke of Edinburgh 1914-15 Star Trio awarded to Able Seaman Edgar Dowling who was also Sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labour for dereliction of duty in 1918. Comprising 1914-15 Star, (J.9407. E. Dowling. A.B. R.N.), 1914-1920 British War and Victory Medals, (J.9407 E. Dowling. A.B. R.N.). scratches to reverse of star, otherwise lightly toned fine (3).
A.B. Dowling served aboard H.M.S. Duke of Edinburgh form the 3rd of March 1914 to the 30th of January 1917:
Duke of Edinburgh was transferred to the Grand Fleet in December 1914 and participated in the Battle of Jutland in May 1916. She was not damaged during the battle and was the only ship of her squadron to survive. She was eventually transferred to the Atlantic Ocean in August 1917 for convoy escort duties.
Edgar Dowling was born on the 18th of January 1893 in Bristol, Somerset a Labourer by trade when he joined the Royal Navy on the 18th of January 1911. He served aboard H.M.S. Duke of Edinburgh at the Battle of Jutland. On the 10th of January 1918 he was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment with Hard Labour for leaving place of duty at his Gun without orders. His sentence was suspended on the 11th of May 1918. He was discharged to Shore on the 17th of January 1923 and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on the 13th of October 1924.
