Description
Mexico, Philip V (1700-1746), silver Cob of 8 Reales, style of 1714-1723 oMJ, Mexico City, 24.95g (KM 47; Cal. 1084-1088). Fine, saltwater damage. From Slot ter Hooge, which sunk in 1724 off the island of Porto Santo in Madeira archipelago. The lot is accompanied by a note from Groupe de Recherche Archeologique Sour-Marine Post-Medievale about the shipwreck.
The Slot ter Hooge (Castle of Hooge) ship was lost on the rocks on the north coast of the island of Porto Santo in the Madeira archipelago in 1724. It was en route to Batavia with a full cargo of wine, food and treasure that was 350,000 guldens worth of silver.
