Description
Mexico, Philip V (1700-1746), silver Cob of 4 Reales, 1732 oMF, Mexico City, 9.12g (KM 40a; Cal. 1096). Fine, saltwater damage. From Vliegenthart, which sunk in 1735 off Zeeland, Netherlands. The lot is accompanied by a Certificate of Origin.
After being refitted over the winter months, the Vliegenthart (Flying Heat) left the Netherlands for the East Indies on 3rd February 1735. However, the Vliegenthart and her smaller companion ship Anna Catharina never left Dutch waters. With a strong gale blowing as they left shore, ships were driven onto a sandbar and severely damaged which led to their sinking.
