Description
Conjoined busts of Mercury and Minerva r., rev. Olive wreath, with engraved inscription - TO A. BAIN, M.D., MDCCCVIII, For Plantations of Forest Trees, Cl. 14, (E 643), in original beige velvet and silk lined, round, red shagreen case. Test scrapes on rev. edge at 5 and 6 o’ clock, otherwise good Extremely Fine with beautiful radiance.

The A. Bain MD refered to on the prize medal is possibly Andrew Bain, born near Edinburgh, and educated in the university there, where he graduated as doctor of medicine on the 24th June, 1780 (D.M.I. de Causis Febrium). He commenced his medical career at Bath, where he practised with distinguished success for several years. Removing to London, he was admitted a Licentiate of the College of Physicians 12th April, 1802, and a Fellow, speciali gratiâ, 25th June, 1813. Dr. Bain was gazetted physician extraordinary to the Prince Regent in 1811. He withdrew from London in 1820, and retired to his estate, Heffleton in Dorset, where he died on the 30th April, 1827.
