Portcullis coat of arms of Westminster suspended below a crown amidst leaf scrolls; motto, DISCITE JUSTITIAM MONITI (Learn to administer justice) Rev. IN 1765, HIS MOST GRACIOUS MAJESTY GEO. III. Gave to the Magistrates in the CITY AND LIBERTY OF WESTMINSTER Permission to distinguish themselves by Wearing THE ARMS OF WESTMINSTER With the Emblems of Magistracy ON A GOLD SHIELD Fastened to a Ribbon hanging down the breast, inscribed T. J. MILLER, JUNE 1856. C. T. MILLER FEBY 1867. London assay office, integral suspension loop with modern ring and ribbon. Extremely Fine, this badge thought to be originally issued without box.
Taverner John Miller (1804-1867) was an English businessman and Conservative politician. He was the owner of a whaling business based in Westminster and held a seat in the House of Commons from 1852 to 1853, and from 1857 to 1867. C. T. MILLER is likely to be Miller’s father, Charles Taverner Miller (1773–1830), posthumously inscribed by the former shortly before his death. Cf. Baldwin’s of St James’s Auction 37 Lot 517.
