Description
Charles I (1625-49), Halfcrown, 1643, Oxford mint, Intermediate period by Briot, reads CAROLLVS, crowned armoured King on horseback left with upright sword breaking inner beaded circle and flowing sash, grassy ground below, plume behind, legend and beaded borders surrounding, initial mark Oxford plume on obverse only, CAROLLVS DG MAG BRI FRA ET HI REX. Rev, declaration in two lines, RELIG: PROT: LEG / ANGL: LIBER: PA, three Oxford plumes above, date below, legend reads EXVRGAT DEVS DISSIPENTVR INIMICI, 14.76g (S.2956; N.2416; cf. Brooker 893; Morrison H-1). Toned with underlying mint bloom around the periphery, more so on the reverse. Metal flaw behind king, otherwise a bold fine for notoriously weakly struck type, reverse a grade better, scarce.
