Description
Harold I (1035-1040), Penny, Jewel Cross type (c.1036-1038), Dover mint, moneyer Cinstan, diademed bust left, legend surrounds +HAROLD RECX. Rev, cross of four ovals united by concentric circles with a central pellet, legend reads +CINNISTAN ON DO, the ND ligate, 0.97g (S.1163; N.802; BMC Type I; cf. SCBI 18 [Copenhagen], 44). Pleasing bright tone with underlying hues of gold, legends both sides struck up well and further accentuated by a bold portrait. Some striking cracks, one obverse peckmark, otherwise extremely fine, metal stable. A rare mint and type for reign.
