Description
Jacobite, Henry IX copper pattern Touch Piece 3.42gm. (ca. 1788-1807). Probably of Italian manufacture - by G. Hamerani. Sailing ship right; rev. St. Michael slaying the dragon (Woolf Obv 3.a/ Rev 3.a). Good Extremely Fine, nicely toned.
Cardinal Henry Stuart was the younger brother of Charles Edward Stuart and when Bonnie Prince Charlie died in 1788, he became the next and last Stuart pretender to the British throne as Henry IX. It is at this point that this piece was made as a pattern for Henry’s Touch piece, a custom that all Stuart monarchs had practised, especially as pretenders to prove their royal prerogative. Henry did practise ‘touching’ in Rome and silver touch pieces for him are known although they differ slightly in detail form this pattern – so this pattern wasn’t adopted without some minor change.
