Description
Roman (c. 2nd Century AD) Boar brooch, copper‑alloy and enamelled (27x14mm, 4.40g). A copper‑alloy, zoomorphic plate brooch in the form of a boar with bristled back. Boar’s body is decorated with a niche in the form of a hunting dog, containing the remains of red enamel. The back of the brooch bears loop with remainder of pin, and damaged catch‑plate. (See PAS SUSS‑DB2C32 for similar, but without the dog motif). Much enamel lost. Pin and rear leg of boar missing. Fascinating piece with hunting‑dog motif, conjuring up images of Romano‑British hunting scenes. Some traces of silvering remaining Apparently very rare, with no comparative examples on the PAS database and only a handful of boar brooches recorded
Footnote
From the collection of a metal detectorist. Assembled since the 1980s.
