Like most legendary discoveries, there is always a lingering fear that the reality may not live up to the hype. In the case of the Northern Collection, however, our highest expectations were not only met - they were exceeded.
The journey began under a shroud of secrecy. When Bryson Johnson, of Comics Heaven in Stockholm, first contacted us, the instructions were clear. An illustrious collector had acquired a huge collection of comics, the likes of which had not been seen before.
The new owner and the previous owner of the collection wanted to remain anonymous, to protect the collection from theft. With a spate of high value collectable thefts in the headlines, we can understand why.
We were told of an illustrious library that filled entire rooms, containing some of the rarest comics ever produced, many in exceptional condition. Naturally, we had to see it for ourselves.
We boarded a plane to Stockholm, headed for the residence of the new owner, and were led into the basement. What we found was an "Aladdin’s Cave" of comic book history. It is difficult to articulate the visual impact of around 90,000 comic books, it is truly awe-inspiring.
Amassed over decades, with the original owner actively collecting from approximately 1960 to 1990, the sheer scale was breathtaking. The haul totalled some 90,000 comics; accounting for multiples, the collection boasts around 55,000 unique titles. This was not merely a collection; it was a comprehensive archive of 20th-century cultural history.
A Window into the Golden and Silver Ages
Many of these issues have remained unseen for decades, having never before been brought to the open market. The collection spans the "Golden Age" (prior to the implementation of the comics code) documenting a bygone era of storytelling.
From 1940s issues depicting superheroes in the fight against Hitler to 1960s titles encapsulating the fear and fascination of the Atomic Age, the collection maps the evolving attitudes of society and the history of media consumption.
For the dedicated collector, the highlights are significant. The haul includes:
- The first editions of Amazing Spider-Man, X-Men, The Incredible Hulk, Fantastic Four and Daredevil
- Rare titles of historical significance and from independent publishers, including Chamber of Chills and Lady Phantom
- Pre-code adult comics created before industry censorship
Bringing the Collection to Market
The logistics of managing a project of this magnitude are significant. The collection will be sold through a series of dedicated auctions. To ensure the highest standards of authentication, key issues are being graded by CGC, who have honoured the find by creating a custom label specifically for the Northern Collection. The total estimated value of the archive sits between £3 million and £4 million.
This archive represents the life’s work of a devoted collector, and it is with great pride that Stanley Gibbons Baldwin’s brings such a culturally significant discovery to the world stage for the first time. The first selection from the Northern Collection is now live, alongside other notable comics, and accepting bids. With the first auction set to close on 27th March 2026.
Did the collection exceed our expectations? Categorically, yes. The mysticism that surrounded such a collection was worthy of the superheroes contained within its pages. This is likely the largest comic book collection ever discovered in Europe, and it is doubtful we will ever see anything like it again.
