Magic: The Gathering (MTG), first released in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast, holds the title of the world's first and longest-running trading card game. MTG has continued reinventing itself through the Universes Beyond series, which brings outside franchises into the game. A prime example is the 1/1 'The One Ring' card from the Lord of the Rings crossover, which sold for over $2 million, cementing the idea that MTG crossovers can create high-value collectables.
Meanwhile, Spider-Man, created in 1962 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, made his debut in Amazing Fantasy #15. That appearance launched a massive comic book legacy and eventually helped the character generate over $9 billion at the global box office while amassing a huge fanbase.
With the success of previous Universes Beyond sets, introducing a character like Spider-Man seems like a setup for a promising crossover, but will Spider-Man MTG capture the same excitement as Lord of the Rings or Final Fantasy, or will it fall short of its potential?
