Description
Local cover sent by Lal Singh from Kotah City to the Registrar's Office at Kotah City franked with handstruck postage stamp on yellow paper reading "RIYASAT KOTAH" (Kotah State) in black ink in Urdu size 24 mm diameter. The stamp bears the words "DOO PAISA VASOOL" (two paisa realized) with serial number and the initials of the Postmaster all inscribed with thin quill pen. This is tied to the cover with "RIYASAT KOTAH" cds dated 22 October with manuscript "1889" on the front. Postage rate was 2 paisa for letters weighting up to 1/2 tola. Scott # 2. This is the latest recorded usage of a Kotah stamp.
XXXAfter much experimentation the postmaster at Kotah City had an ingenious idea to make postage stamps using the .postmark canceller as a stamp die by removing the month and date plugs and making impressions on similar papers as were used for the forerunners. A numbering system, the value of 2 paisa and the postmaster’s signature were added to these stampsXXX
