Footnote
Anna Ivanovna reigned as Regent until Peter II’s death in 1730, at which point she took on the title of Empress. Her rule was characterised by her eccentricity and cruel sense of humour, and was often referred to as the ‘dark era’. However, she continued to fund the Russian Academy of Science established by Peter the Great, and expanded it to include more students, as well as accepting those studying the arts. Millions of Roubles were spent on two major conflicts during Anna’s reign – the War of the Polish Succession and in particular, the Russo-Turkish War.
