Footnote
Nicholas II was the last Emperor of Russia. In February 1913, Nicholas presided over the tercentenary celebrations for the Romanov Dynasty. His attempts at modernization were challenged by his desire for autocratic rule, strong aristocratic opposition and defeats sustained in the Russo-Japanese War and World War I. In 1917, the revolutionaries stopped the Tsar’s train, leaving Nicholas stranded and with no authority remaining. He was forced to abdicate, ending the Romanovs’ 304 year rule of Russia. Although vilified as the callous tyrant by Soviet historians, in recent decades him and his family were rehabilitated and their killing was ruled as unlawful.
