Description
1884 Before and After the Stamp Committee Presentation book. Presentation book created by D.L.R. comprising three pages of stamps mounted in sunken frames. The first (key) page with a set of the ½d-1s in use before 1883 comprising 1865-67 9d straw (SG 98) the ABNORMAL PLATE 5 (see footnote in SG Concise, severely toned example), 1873-80 2½d blue plate 22 (SG 142), 1880-83 3d rose plate 21, 4d brown plate 18, 6d grey plate 18 and 1s ABNORMAL PURPLE 14 line perf 14 (see footnote in SG Concise) (SG 158, 160/1 and 163), 1880-81 ½d deep green, 1½d Venetian-red, 2d pale rose and 5d Indigo, (SG 164, 167/9) and 1881 1d lilac (16 dots - SG 172), these all line perforated imprimaturs produced especially for this book. The second page has the stamps in use after April 1st 1884 (½d-1s lilac and green issue) and the third page has the set to be issued from January 1st 1887 (½d-1s Jubilee issue) all the stamps have full perforations. This is an exceptionally rare book of which only thirty-six examples were produced (not all with the 1s purple). Most of these books have subsequently been broken up and of those that are still intact many have had the rare stamps replaced with more common examples (which was the case for this book but have subsequently been repatriated with the rare issues). A superb surface printed rarity.
