1840 1d Blue ‘The One Penny Blue’ Pl.8. Used example lettered OL cancelled by a faint black numeral cancellation. Cut into value at foot but clearly showing ‘ONE PENNY’. These trials were printed for Rowland Hill in three colours red-brown, full deep blue and Prussian blue as he wished to see the chosen colour of the 1d in sheet form he also wished to make a decision on the shade of the 2d. He chose the ‘Full deep blue’ shade. Some of these 1d blue proofs reached the public and were used for postage. BPA cert. (1994), RPS cert. (1998). Rare. Cat £75,000.
